Línea de trabajo

Start by locating the needsRoot tool installation logic and the container tests that install tools such as git. Check how versioned tool folders are created, how uninstall and reinstall work as root, and which current tools require root. Done means those folders and files are root-owned and not writable by the container user, links still work, and container tests verify ownership.

Descripción

What would you like containerbase to do?

Install the tools that need root (needsRoot, e.g. git) owned by root, so the files only root may install can't be changed by the container user afterwards.

Background

  • Tool versions live under the tools folder, which the container user owns, so they can be installed at runtime without root.
  • needsRoot tools are installed by root, but their files end up writable for the container user too, like every other tool.
  • That's not a security boundary (the user can install and run tools anyway), but root-only tools are the ones root runs, e.g. git with the system config in /etc/gitconfig, so they should be owned by root like any other system binary.

Proposal

  • For needsRoot tools, create the versioned tool folder and its files owned by root and not writable for the container user; the links stay as they are.
  • Keep uninstall and re-install working as root.
  • Check which current tools are needsRoot and test the ownership in the container tests (e.g. git).
