Línea de trabajo

The request asks for a Python package that wraps dbc's driver management, so start with the Go dbc.Client library added in 0.3.0 and the CLI's driver install and list paths, which the payload does not name by file. Nothing is settled yet: the API surface, packaging and how the Python side calls dbc are open. Done means a maintainer-agreed design, not a patch, so ask in the issue before writing code.

Descripción

Summary

The dbc 0.3.0 release added a Go library (dbc.Client) for embedding dbc in applications, and the post invited requests for bindings in other languages. I'd like to request a Python client: an importable API for managing ADBC drivers without shelling out to the dbc CLI.

Motivation

A Python client would be a good middle ground between the two models Python users have had so far:

  • Per-driver PyPI packages: one package per driver (e.g. SQLite, PostgreSQL, and Snowflake/BigQuery (no longer updated))
  • The dbc CLI: one central tool and registry for every driver, but it sits outside Python and has to run as a separate process.

A Python client would keep dbc's single, centralised driver management while letting Python projects depend on it like any other package and install drivers from code. That would help in the cases the post calls out: applications that manage drivers for their users, unattended installs in pipelines/CI, and agent-generated code that installs a driver and connects in one go.
