Start by reproducing the behavior in Apache NetBeans 31: build any project and observe when the Output and Variables tabs open and which tab is selected. Then trace the IDE’s build-output and tab-selection entry points; the issue names no files or tests, so locating the responsible code will take investigation. Done means the IDE no longer switches to Variables before compilation finishes and failure output remains accessible in Output.

What happened
During the compilation, the IDE opens the Output and Variables tabs by default and switches to the Variables tab during the compilation, while there may still be failure output in the corresponding tab.
