Problem

The DuckDB plugin opens a local file or a remote DuckDB server over Quack (databases/duckdb.mdx), but a MotherDuck database cannot be reached at all.

The extension path is no longer the blocker it was. The macOS DuckDB build links core_functions, json, parquet, icu and autocomplete statically and keeps runtime autoloading on (apple/scripts/duckdb-macos-extensions.cmake), and the Remote (Quack) connection already opens an in-memory DuckDB, turns on autoinstall and autoload, runs INSTALL quack and LOAD quack, stores a token as a secret and attaches the remote (apple/Plugins/DuckDBDriverPlugin/DuckDBPlugin.swift:328). The motherduck extension can arrive the same way, from extensions.duckdb.org on first use.

Proposed solution
  • A MotherDuck connection type on the DuckDB form, next to Local File and Remote (Quack), taking a database name (or none for all of them) and a service token in a secure field kept in the Keychain.
  • Connect the way Quack does: an in-memory DuckDB, autoloading on, INSTALL motherduck and LOAD motherduck, the token passed as motherduck_token or a secret, then ATTACH 'md:…'.
  • Hosted databases, schemas and tables in the sidebar, which the Quack path does not list today.
  • Attach a local file alongside a MotherDuck database in one connection, where DuckDB allows it.
  • A clear error for the two likely failures: no route to extensions.duckdb.org on the first connect, and an extension build that does not match the bundled DuckDB version (apple/scripts/build-duckdb.sh:22).

Done means a MotherDuck connection with only a token lists the account's databases and runs a query.
