Read lectures/gradual_liberalization_network.md at the cited passages and lectures/_static/quant-econ.bib, then check the cited papers and NBER listings against each claim. Confirm the figures and publication year, decide whether to retain or revise the inference, and update the lecture and citation if needed; done when each claim is supported or qualified by its source.

Descripción

question

While reviewing #399, which adds the gradual_liberalization_network lecture, I checked every number the lecture computes against the code output, and they all match. The items below are claims about other papers, which the code can't verify. They need checking against the papers themselves.

1. An inference about the G7 calibration: keep, soften, or drop?

gradual_liberalization_network.md L780–782: "The same approximation suggests that the positive best constant tariff that Bassetto, Huo, and Ríos-Rull (2026) find for the G7 rests on very unequal consumption across U.S. sectors at low tariffs, although they do not report a measure of that inequality."

This is our inference about their model, not a result they report. The first-order condition behind it assumes symmetric countries and efficient free trade. Exercise 2 shows that even in this lecture's own model the condition is noticeably off for the best constant tariff: it predicts a threshold of 7.95 for $\mathcal{I}/\eta$, but the exact crossing lies between 8.5 and 8.8. Should the sentence stay as is, be softened, or be dropped?

2. Bonadio et al., "Playing with Blocs: Quantifying Decoupling"
  • L949–951: the lecture says the trade-cost changes raised real income in the median country "by about 0.6 percent". The NBER abstract (w34302) gives 0.4–0.6% for the median country in the world and for the median country within each bloc. Should this read "by 0.4 to 0.6 percent"?
  • L958–959: the claim that the fall in trade costs within blocs lagged the rise between them, from comparing 2015–2019 with 2015–2023, is not in the abstract. Can it be confirmed in the body of the paper?
  • quant-econ.bib L3896–3903: the entry gives Journal of International Economics vol. 163, article 104204, year 2026. NBER's listing places vol. 163 in the 2025 International Seminar on Macroeconomics. Is the journal year 2025 or 2026? If it is 2025, the citation key BonadioEtAl2026 should change too.
3. Figures from Bassetto, Huo, and Ríos-Rull (2026)

I couldn't check these against the working paper. Please confirm them:

Lines Claim in the lecture
L596–597 For the G7, worker welfare rises by roughly 0.05 between free trade and a 5 percent tariff, and peaks at about 40 percent
L624–625 Across quintiles of 30 sectors, consumption rises by 4.3 percent in the lowest quintile and falls by 0.3 percent in the highest
L699–700 The decline in the return to capital computed in the lecture "is close to the decline they report"
