The report is a question about why the Linux CUPS media list lacks a 3x5 index card size that the Windows Brother driver offers, and it names no file, test or entry point. A newcomer would first need to find where the printer's supported media are read from the printer or its driver. Done would mean the maintainers have answered whether this is a driver or CUPS issue, and any change is decided with them.

Descripción

Hello,

Calling this a bug report is perhaps too strong, but I didn't know where else to ask.

When I print, using LibreOffice Writer 7.6.4.1 on a Windows 11 Home computer to a Brothers MFC-7840W laser printer, I can see 21 different sizes of media, including "3.00inx5.00in", a 3x5 index card that I'm most interested in printing on. When I do the same on my LibreOffice Writer 24.2.7.2 system running on Linux Ubuntu 24.04 and CUPS 2.7.4 with the same printer, I see only 12 different sizes of media, and one of the ones missing is my 3x5 card.

Is this a due to the difference between the Windows Printer driver, presumably from Brothers, versus a CUPS printer driver? If this is the case, is there anyway to encourage the CUPS developers to add a 3x5 card to the media list for Linux? Do the systems query the printer to find the media it supports?

Thanks for helping me understand what's going on. Let me know if I should move this post somewhere else.

-Kevin
