Línea de trabajo

Start by locating the Okapi board schematic and layout, then trace UB_USB_N and UB_USB_P from the Micro-B connector to the Particle B-Series M.2 module. Check the primary USB path to the FT231X as noted. Done means selecting and placing suitable USB 2.0 ESD protection on the secondary path and documenting whether the primary path also needs external protection.

Descripción

bug

Summary

The Particle B-Series M.2 module exposes a secondary USB interface (UB_USB_N / UB_USB_P) through a Micro-B connector on the Okapi board. There is no ESD protection device on these lines. USB lines are among the most ESD-vulnerable signals on a PCB because they are exposed directly to the outside world through a mechanical connector. USB specifications and IPC-2221 both recommend ESD protection at the connector.

Risk

Without ESD suppression:

  • A single ESD event during cable connect/disconnect can permanently damage the B-Series module's USB PHY (internal to the module, not field-replaceable)
  • The B-Series module is the most expensive and least field-serviceable component on the board
  • Field instruments in outdoor/remote deployments are especially prone to ESD from dry/low-humidity environments or long cable runs acting as antennas

Affected signals

  • UB_USB_N (B-Series M.2 pin UB_USB_N)
  • UB_USB_P (B-Series M.2 pin UB_USB_P)
  • USB connector (Micro-B)

Recommended fix

Add a dual-channel TVS / ESD suppressor optimized for USB 2.0 on both USB_N and USB_P lines between the connector and the M.2 module. Recommended parts:

Part Package C_load (typ) V_c (8/20µs, 1A)
PRTR5V0U2X (NXP) SOT363 0.4 pF 10 V
USBLC6-2SC6 (STMicro) SOT23-6 1 pF 7 V
TPD2E2U06 (TI) SOT363 0.35 pF 6.5 V

Place the protection device as close as possible to the USB connector (within 5 mm), before the series resistors if any, with a direct GND via adjacent to the package.

Note: the primary USB path (USB_N/USB_P to FT231X) should also be checked for ESD protection coverage — verify whether FT231X (U8 or equivalent) has internal ESD diodes (it does have basic protection but external TVS is still recommended for robust field use).
