Línea de trabajo

Start with Buffer::extract() in src/service-maker/sources/core/src/buffer.cpp and the Python binding in src/service-maker/sources/python/src/bindings/buffer.h. Trace how an unsupported surface format and an out-of-range batch_id reach the returned tensor, then run the provided repro.py with RGBA, NV12, and RGB. Done means invalid inputs fail safely and the reported reproductions no longer segfault; RGBA support is described as an additional possibility, not a required fix.

Descripción

Describe the bug

Buffer.extract(batch_id) returns a Tensor object even when it cannot extract anything. Using that object (here reading tensor.shape) segfaults the process. This happens in two cases:

  1. The surface is not RGB, for example RGBA or NV12. RGBA is the format nvdsosd and nvmultistreamtiler work in, so this is the format an application is most likely to have.
  2. batch_id is not below the number of frames in the batch.

In both cases the only hint is a g_printerr line, "Only RGB format is supported for being extracted as a tensor", which is also misleading in the second case.

Buffer::extract() leaves tensor as nullptr for every surface that is not RGB and returns it after the g_printerr. It reads surface_batch->surfaceList[batchId] without checking batchId against numFilled, so an out-of-range id reads past the end of the list (here the read colour format is not RGB, so it ends in the same nullptr). The Python binding wraps the result in TensorWrapper without checking for nullptr.

Steps/Code to reproduce bug

Save as repro.py:

import faulthandler
import sys

from pyservicemaker import BufferOperator, Pipeline, Probe

faulthandler.enable()

class Extract(BufferOperator):
    def __init__(self):
        super().__init__()
        self.done = False

    def handle_buffer(self, buffer):
        if not self.done:
            self.done = True
            tensor = buffer.extract(0)
            print(f"extract(0) returned {type(tensor).__name__}", flush=True)
            print(f"shape {tensor.shape}", flush=True)
        return True

pipeline = Pipeline("extract")
pipeline.add("videotestsrc", "src", {"num-buffers": 30})
pipeline.add("nvvideoconvert", "conv", {})
pipeline.add("capsfilter", "caps", {"caps": f"video/x-raw(memory:NVMM), format={sys.argv[1]}"})
pipeline.add("fakesink", "sink", {"sync": False})
pipeline.link("src", "conv", "caps", "sink")
pipeline.attach("caps", Probe("extract", Extract()))
pipeline.start()
pipeline.wait()
print("wait() returned")

Run it in the stock container (pyyaml is installed first because import pyservicemaker needs it, see #98):

docker run --rm --gpus all -v "$PWD":/repro --entrypoint bash nvcr.io/nvidia/deepstream:9.1-triton-multiarch \
  -c "pip install -q --break-system-packages pyyaml && python3 /repro/repro.py RGBA; echo exit code \$?"

RGB works:

extract(0) returned Tensor
shape (240, 320, 3)
...
wait() returned
exit code 0

RGBA and NV12 segfault on tensor.shape:

Only RGB format is supported for being extracted as a tensor
extract(0) returned Tensor
Fatal Python error: Segmentation fault

Current thread 0x00007798613fd6c0 (most recent call first):
  File "/repro/repro.py", line 19 in handle_buffer
...
exit code 139

With RGB and buffer.extract(1) in place of buffer.extract(0) (a batch of one frame), the output is the same: the "Only RGB format" line, then a segfault, exit code 139.

Expected behavior

  1. extract() raises a Python exception (for example ValueError) when the surface format is not supported or batch_id is out of range, or returns None. It never returns an object that crashes on use.
  2. extract() checks batch_id against numFilled.
  3. If possible, extract() also supports RGBA (shape (height, width, 4), strides (pitch, 4, 1)). Today an application that needs pixels after nvdsosd or the tiler has to add an nvvideoconvert to RGB only for this.

Additional context

The segfault ends the process with no Python traceback unless faulthandler is enabled, so in a service it looks like a crash with no cause. The aarch64 branch of Buffer::extract() has the same nullptr return for non-RGB surfaces.
