Read CONTRIBUTING.md and the Assistants API declarations under Sources/OpenAI/Public/Models and OpenAIProtocol/OpenAIAsync/OpenAICombine, then inspect the Demo entry points named in the issue: MiscView, AssistantsView, AssistantStore, ChatStore, Conversation, ListView, and DetailView. Check the README and changelog conventions as well. Done means the package API is deprecated with guidance to Responses/Conversations, the README reflects shutdown, and the Demo no longer contains Assistants UI or calls that API and builds without deprecation warnings.

Descripción

OpenAI shut down the Assistants API on August 26, 2026 (announced August 26, 2025). The recommended replacement is the Responses API together with the Conversations API. See https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/deprecations.

The package and the Demo app both still expose it, so every Assistants request now fails.

Package

Public API that talks to the Assistants, Threads and Runs endpoints:

  • Methods on OpenAIProtocol / OpenAIAsync / OpenAICombine: assistants, assistantCreate, assistantModify, threads, threadRun, threadsAddMessage, threadsMessages, runs, runRetrieve, runRetrieveSteps, runSubmitToolOutputs
  • Types in Sources/OpenAI/Public/Models: AssistantsQuery, AssistantResult, AssistantsResult, AssistantsTool, ThreadsQuery, ThreadsResult, ThreadRunQuery, ThreadAddMessagesResult, ThreadsMessagesResult, RunsQuery, RunResult, RunRetrieveQuery, RunRetrieveStepsResult, RunToolOutputsQuery
  • README: the Assistants (Beta) section

Under the API stability policy in CONTRIBUTING.md, public API is deprecated before it is removed. Proposed steps:

  1. Mark all of the above @available(*, deprecated, message: ...), pointing to the Responses API (and Conversations API), and add a CHANGELOG entry.
  2. Update the README: remove the Assistants section or mark it as shut down.
  3. Remove the deprecated API in a later major release.

Demo

The Demo still has a working Assistants UI:

  • Misc tab → "Assistants" link (MiscView) → AssistantsView, AssistantsListView, AssistantModalContentView
  • AssistantStore, created in APIProvidedView and passed through ContentView, ChatView and MiscView
  • Assistant conversations in the Chat tab: the assistant conversation type in Conversation, the thread and run handling in ChatStore, and the special cases in ListView and DetailView (including the hardcoded gpt-4o-mini model)

Remove all of it. The Demo should also stop calling the deprecated package API, so it builds without deprecation warnings.
