set_observer_thresholds and set_observer_scale were removed in v0.46.0 (#1687), the same PR that removed set_observer_window. #2198 / PR #2211 fixes the set_observer_window comments only. Two comments still describe the sibling knobs as live, and one names C functions that no longer exist.

What is stale (main 25c96b9)
  • src/eigenscript.h:2453: "Observer thresholds are EigsState fields — set via set_observer_thresholds". Nothing live sets them; only tape_read.c installs them from an O cfg record (src/tape_read.c:533-537).
  • src/tape_read.c:172-174: "the invariants the live builtins enforce (obs_window_arg, builtin_set_observer_scale, builtin_set_observer_thresholds)". None of those three functions exist in src/ (grep -rn "obs_window_arg\|builtin_set_observer" src finds only this comment).

src/trace.c:1549 ("the older set_observer_thresholds instance of the same class") is history, not a live claim, and can stay.

Found while fixing #2198; out of that PR's bar.

Done when

  • grep -rn "set via set_observer_thresholds" src/ prints nothing.
  • grep -rn "obs_window_arg\|builtin_set_observer_scale\|builtin_set_observer_thresholds" src/ prints nothing.
  • The rewritten tape_read.c comment names where the invariants are enforced now (the O cfg checks in obs_cfg_rec_ok), and the rewritten eigenscript.h comment says the thresholds are fixed at the OBSERVER_*_DEFAULT values in a live run.
  • Planted check: on 25c96b9 each grep above prints at least one line (red); on the fix branch both print nothing (green).
