Línea de trabajo

Start with the symlink tests and the CONTRIBUTING.md guidance mentioned in the issue; review discussions #205 and #243 for the reported Windows problems. Check Microsoft's documentation on symlink permissions and link it from the contributor guidance. Done when tests skip locally without symlink access, CI fails if access is unavailable, and the development mode requirement is documented.

Descripción

documentation help wanted

Currenly we have the following verse in the CONTRIBUTING.md:

Tests involving symlink creation require elevated privileges on Windows, as this is enforced at the OS level.

This is demonstrably not correct: I run tests without elevation and everything works for me.

Contributors confirm that there are problems, though: see #205 and #243.

We need to document this better (mention that dev mode is required, and confirm this against Microsoft's documentation, add a link to our docs), and to make the contributors' lives more convenient:

  • check in the corresponding tests that the dev mode or elevation is available (i.e. that we are allowed to create symlinks); skip tests if not
  • assert on CI that we are allowed to create symlinks (i.e. ensure that we are running the tests on CI and not skipping them silently)
