Start with the linked sample application and the azure-functions-java-opentelemetry README, then compare the Dedicated and Flex Consumption startup behavior. Check the deployed artifact layout and JAVA_OPTS configuration described in the issue. Done means identifying why the agent is not loaded on Flex Consumption and documenting a verified troubleshooting step or fix.

Descripción

area:java-functions

Hi there,

I'm trying this sample application https://github.com/Azure-Samples/functions-quickstart-java-azd-otel, which out of the box only enables OTel for the Function host. When I follow the README for azure-functions-java-opentelemetry to enable OTel for the Function app, it works fine if the Functions hosting plan is Dedicated--there are worker startup logs from the OTel Java agent showing its version, and I get the automatica middleware spans for each function invocation plus custom telemetry collected via the OTel API.

However, if the Function is on a Flex Consumption plan, there isn't any worker log showing the OTel Java agent is loaded and there's no telemetry from the application.

I've confirmed using Microsoft Azure Storage Explorer that the artifact deployed to blob storage has the OTel Java agent, this is the unzipped directory structure:

.
├── first_http_function
│   └── function.json
├── host.json
├── java-otel-cascade-1.0-SNAPSHOT.jar
├── lib
│   ├── azure-functions-java-library-3.3.0.jar
│   ├── azure-functions-java-opentelemetry-1.1.0.jar
│   ├── opentelemetry-api-1.65.0.jar
│   ├── opentelemetry-common-1.65.0.jar
│   └── opentelemetry-context-1.65.0.jar
├── opentelemetry-javaagent.jar
├── second_http_function
│   └── function.json
└── servicebus_queue_trigger
    └── function.json

And the Function app's environment variable settings includes this for loading the agent:

 {
    "name": "JAVA_OPTS",
    "value": "-javaagent:opentelemetry-javaagent.jar",
    "slotSetting": false
  },

I've also tried adding the OTEL_JAVAAGENT_DEBUG: true setting but that didn't result in any more info.

Really apppreciate any insight or further troubleshooting help!
