Research direction

No files, tests, or entry points are named. Start by locating the installer’s keyboard-layout and home-folder input handling, then trace how layouts are transferred to the installed system. Done means a Latin layout is added by default alongside non-Latin layouts during installation and remains available afterward.

Description

Issue

When choosing language with a non Latin writing system (i.e. Russian Cyrillic), user has no way to enter Latin characters which are required for the home folder name (and probably for password as well on the next screen) and so unable to complete the installation.

Current workarounds

  • Go back to the beginning of the installer and choose other language for input or
  • Go to setting and change layouts manually

Expected way

When choosing language with a non Latin writing system, second keyboard layout with the Latin characters (usually English) should be added by default, both for the installation and for the installed system. Same approach is used on both Windows and current Ubuntu installer.
