Research direction

Read the README to confirm the shipped functionality and positioning, then review the repository metadata topics against it. Choose a small, accurate set from the candidates in the issue; done when the public repository has those topics and provider readback confirms them without suggesting deferred features or a health score.

Written by the indexing model from the issue text.

Description

Why

The current public repository metadata has a clear description but an empty topics list. GitHub documents repository topics as a discovery/classification surface: they help people find repositories by subject area and explore related projects.

Devostasis already has a concrete public identity in the README — a Python 3.12+ deterministic, model-free repository-vitals tool, with GitHub Actions/reusable-workflow usage — so this is a low-risk metadata gap rather than a request to invent a new positioning.

This is separate from #24. PyPI would improve the standard install/package-index path; topics improve GitHub-native classification and require no runtime/package change.

Observed against master a8726f55a7874bb466b1f44351f9e3c41861c864 on 2026-09-20:

  • repository description: Deterministic, model-free vital signs for software repositories.
  • language: Python
  • topics: []
  • homepage: unset (no change proposed here; there is no separate canonical product site to point at)

Scope

Add a small, accurate topic set that describes the product as it exists now. Candidate vocabulary to review rather than apply mechanically:

  • python
  • developer-tools
  • devops
  • github-actions
  • repository-analysis
  • software-metrics
  • observability
  • software-engineering

Prefer fewer precise topics over speculative/future ones. Do not advertise deferred GitLab support or imply an aggregate health score that the product explicitly rejects.

Non-goals

  • No README or runtime change.
  • No Marketplace wrapper solely for discovery.
  • No homepage invention.
  • No claim that topics alone will materially increase adoption; this only closes an obvious GitHub-native classification gap.

Acceptance criteria

  • The public repository has a non-empty, deliberately reviewed topic set matching currently shipped functionality.
  • Topics do not advertise deferred features or contradict the README's no-health-score / model-free positioning.
  • Provider readback confirms the intended topics on the repository metadata.

Relationships

#24 remains the higher-impact install/distribution improvement: standard PyPI publication through Trusted Publishing. This issue is independent and can be completed without waiting for PyPI.
