Research direction

Locate the “Interfaces to Open Source Optimizers” section and the ROI plugin list in the task view. Update the Clp/Cbc entry with the proposed final sentence and add the ROI.plugin.coinclp entry alongside the other ROI plugins. Done means both package names, descriptions, and links are included with the existing formatting preserved.

Written by the indexing model from the issue text.

Description

The 'Clp'/'Cbc' entry under Interfaces to Open Source Optimizers describes what Clp does, then points readers only at rcbc for Cbc — reasonably, since there has been no R interface to Clp since clpAPI was archived in November 2021 (taking ROI.plugin.clp with it two months later).

There is one again. coinclp and ROI.plugin.coinclp have both been on CRAN since mid-September 2026. Both link against an installed COIN-OR Clp rather than bundling it; on Windows the Rtools toolchain supplies it, so nothing extra is needed there.

Proposed amendment to the existing entry, changing only the final sentence:

  • 'Clp' and 'Cbc' are open source solvers from the COIN-OR suite. 'Clp' solves linear programs with continuous objective variables, and 'Cbc' is a powerful mixed integer linear programming solver based on 'Clp', i.e. applies 'Clp' if no integer variables are set. 'Cbc' can be installed from rcbc, 'Clp' from coinclp, which also reproduces the interface of the archived 'clpAPI' package under its original function names. [LP, MILP]

And for the ROI plugins, alongside ROI.plugin.qpoases and ROI.plugin.neos:

  • Package ROI.plugin.coinclp registers 'Clp' with ROI for linear programs with continuous variables, returning dual values, reduced costs and row activities alongside the primal solution. It replaces the archived ROI.plugin.clp. [LP]

Disclosure: I am the author of both packages.
