Description

In Craft 6 alpha, descenders in some text fields are slightly cropped at the bottom on Windows, where the system font is Segoe UI. In the screenshot, the “g” in “design” is cut off in the Slug field of the Info panel. The same field renders correctly with Inter.

I haven’t confirmed the cause, but it may be related to Segoe UI’s font metrics (ascent, descent and line gap) interacting with the field’s line height or height.

Steps to reproduce
  1. Open the control panel in Craft 6 alpha on Windows.
  2. Open an entry’s Info panel (or any view with a text input).
  3. Look at the bottom edge of the text in the Slug field. Descenders such as the “g” in “design” are slightly clipped.
Expected behavior

Text is fully visible, including descenders.

Actual behavior

The bottom of the text is slightly cropped.

Workaround

Switching the font to Inter fixes the clipping.

Suggestion

Whichever font ends up being used, it may be worth aiming for consistent rendering across platforms, so that layout and spacing don’t depend on the metrics of whatever system font a given OS provides. Inter is one option, and the screenshot shows it has some side benefits. Its larger x-height helps readability at small sizes and gives better optical alignment of labels next to icons or status dots (compare the “psithu” label and its dot in the two panels). But the main point is predictability, not that particular font.

Screenshot

Top: Segoe UI, with the “g” clipped. Bottom: Inter, rendering correctly.
