Research direction

Start by reviewing the format module's C++17 configuration and how Boost 1.70 exposes the relevant std::optional compatibility define. Determine which projects or configurations are in scope and what behavior should change; completion should include a documented, tested approach for using std::optional in C++17.

Description

It would be good if std::optional were used in projects that use C++2017.

A define like that which is available in boost.dll 1.70 would suffice in my opinion.
