Research direction

Start by locating the VS Code extension setting that defines claudeCode.initialPermissionMode and inspect its allowed options. Add auto to the list, then verify the setting accepts it and uses Auto Mode as the initial permission mode in a new session.

Preflight Checklist
  • I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?

When I try to set the initial permission mode in the Visual Studio Code extension (version
2.1.318) I see options for default, manual, acceptEdits, plan, and bypassPermissions. There is no option for auto (assuming that bypassPermissions is not the same thing — if it is, it should probably be renamed to match the actual user-facing name of the mode).

It is possible to select Auto Mode from the text entry box in the main Claude dialog screen, but this must be done manually for each session.

What Should Happen?

auto should be added to the list of options availble for claudeCode.initialPermissionMode.

This is not the same as #44941 as that issue also reported Auto not being selectable as part of the text input, which is not the case here.
