Research direction

Start by reading the active model settings and tracing how the language selector's single selection is used for multilingual models such as Cohere. Check how the selected language reaches transcription and what the model supports for language detection; done means users can select multiple languages of interest and transcription can handle those languages without requiring a single active language.

Description

Describe the feature request

Currently, when using multilingual models like Cohere, the language selector only allows selecting a single active language at a time. For bilingual or multilingual users who frequently switch between languages (such as Arabic and English), this restriction makes the transcription output messy and prone to phonetic hallucinations if the spoken language doesn't match the selected one.

For example:

  • Active Model: Cohere - High Accuracy
  • Selected Language: Arabic
  • Spoken Input (English): "what's up with you?"
  • Transcription Output: "واتساب وزير" (nonsense Arabic words matching the phonetics of the English input)

If English is selected, then speaking Arabic is similarly translated or transcribed into English gibberish.

Proposed Solution

Allow selecting multiple languages of interest (e.g., checking both Arabic and English) for multilingual models, rather than restricting the user to a single-select dropdown.

This would enable:

  1. Better handling of code-switching or bilingual dictation.
  2. Restricting auto-detection to a specific subset of languages (e.g., only English and Arabic) to prevent hallucinations in other languages.
UI Reference

In the active model settings, the language selection is a dropdown list (e.g. showing Arabic, German, Greek, English, etc.) allowing only a single selection. For multilingual models, this could be updated to a multi-select dropdown or checkbox list.
