Research direction

Start by checking package.json to confirm the localtunnel and @types/localtunnel entries, then inspect package-lock.json for their dependency paths and search the application code for tunnelmole usage. Remove the unused entries and update the lockfile; done means the lockfile no longer includes packages needed only by localtunnel and existing tunnelmole functionality remains in use. An open pull request already addresses this issue.

Description

What is this about?
Problem / motivation

The project declares localtunnel and @types/localtunnel as dependencies, but the application code appears to use tunnelmole for its tunneling functionality instead.

Keeping unused dependencies increases the dependency tree and can introduce unnecessary transitive packages, maintenance overhead, and potential security vulnerabilities.

In particular, the lockfile currently resolves localtunnel to version 2.0.2, which depends on Axios 0.21.4. Removing the unused package would eliminate this dependency path without changing the application's existing tunneling implementation.

Proposed solution

Remove the unused localtunnel dependency and its corresponding TypeScript definitions.

The proposed changes are:

  • Remove localtunnel from dependencies in package.json.
  • Remove @types/localtunnel from devDependencies.
  • Update package-lock.json to remove the associated packages that are no longer required.
  • Verify that the application continues to use tunnelmole for its existing tunneling functionality.

The scope is limited to dependency cleanup. Other security audit findings should be investigated separately.

Screenshot, mockup or recording

Not applicable. This is a dependency cleanup with no intended UI changes.

Alternatives considered

Keep the existing dependencies: Avoids modifying the dependency tree but retains packages that appear unnecessary.

Replace localtunnel with another tunneling library: Unnecessary because the application already uses tunnelmole.

Upgrade all vulnerable dependencies: Could address additional security findings, but would substantially expand the scope and introduce unrelated compatibility considerations.

Proposed approach: Remove the unused dependency and its type definitions, update the lockfile, and validate the existing application behavior.
