Research direction

Start by reading the TypeScript agent execution and failure handling entry points to understand how agents are monitored and retried; the issue does not name specific files or tests. Define how stagnation is measured, how recovery strategies are selected, and how progress is evaluated, then add configurable limits and safe escalation. Done means repeated unproductive actions trigger an alternative strategy and recovery outcomes are evaluated.

Description

enhancement
Problem / motivation

Michael can detect agent failures, but an agent may continue repeating unsuccessful actions without making meaningful progress. Repeated tool calls, recurring errors, unchanged task states, and excessive token consumption can indicate that an agent is stuck in an unproductive execution loop.

Increasing retry limits may not resolve the underlying problem because the agent can continue using the same unsuccessful approach. This can waste computational resources, increase execution time, and prevent tasks from being completed efficiently.

The key problem is the gap between failure detection and intelligent recovery. Michael should help identify why an agent is stuck and support an effective alternative before stopping or holding execution.

Proposed solution

Implement an intelligent agent recovery mechanism that monitors execution patterns, detects stagnation, analyzes recurring failures, and recommends or initiates an alternative strategy.

When an agent repeatedly fails to make progress, Michael should identify the pattern and select an appropriate recovery action rather than simply retrying the same operation.

Potential recovery strategies include:

Task decomposition: Break complex tasks into smaller, actionable steps.

Alternative investigation: Inspect different files, logs, APIs, or data sources.

Minimal reproduction: Isolate and reproduce the issue using a simplified test case.

Documentation analysis: Search project documentation and existing implementation patterns.

Working implementation comparison: Compare the failing approach with a known working solution.

Multi-agent collaboration: Delegate a specific investigation to another agent.

Reverse problem-solving: Work backwards from the expected output to identify missing steps.

User clarification: Ask targeted questions when required information is unavailable.

Model or strategy switching: Select a more suitable model or reasoning approach when appropriate.

The recovery mechanism should evaluate progress after each intervention and determine whether the selected strategy has improved the task's state.

It should also support configurable stagnation thresholds, retry limits, token budgets, execution timeouts, and safe escalation when recovery is unsuccessful.

The expected outcome is to reduce repeated failures, minimize unnecessary token consumption, improve task completion rates, and make agent execution more adaptive and resource-efficient.

Alternatives considered

Increasing retry limits: Allows additional attempts but may repeat the same unsuccessful actions.

Stopping execution immediately: Prevents further resource consumption but may terminate tasks that could succeed with a different approach.

Implementing conventional retry logic: Helps with transient failures but does not address persistent errors, ineffective tool usage, or a lack of meaningful progress.

Proposed approach: Combine stagnation detection, adaptive strategy selection, progress evaluation, and resource limits to support more effective recovery.
