Research direction

The payload names the chrome.debugger attach path in the extension and the daemon's CDP call handling, plus detectBrowserMeta as the place browser identity is read. Start by reproducing with Vivaldi and capturing daemon logs to see where the 'Detached while handling command' error originates. Done means navigate, observe and screenshot succeed on Vivaldi, or the browser-specific cause is documented with a clear next step. Related: #272 and #410.

Description

Summary

With Vivaldi connected, everything short of page automation works: bsk doctor is all green, bsk browsers lists the instance, session start returns an agent window, and tab list shows the user's tabs. But the first CDP call fails — navigate / observe time out (30–32s), and screenshot reports:

Could not establish background execution for tab <id>: Detached while handling command.

The exact same flow (same daemon, same CLI, same extension build, same machine) works end-to-end on real Chrome. So this looks like Vivaldi mishandling chrome.debugger attachments — same family as #272 (Yandex), except here it fails on the very first session, not after the first one.

We'd like to use BrowserSkill with Vivaldi too.

Environment

  • OS: CachyOS (Arch-based) Linux x86_64
  • Browser: Vivaldi 8.2.4133.87 (Flatpak com.vivaldi.Vivaldi), Chromium token 152.0.0.0 — the extension reports it as chrome 152.0.0.0
  • Working comparison: native Google Chrome 155 on the same machine (reported as chrome 155.0.0.0) — identical tasks succeed
  • bsk CLI 0.3.2, daemon protocol 1.3, extension 0.3.3 (Chrome Web Store), version_skew: false
  • Two browsers connected and labeled (Chrome, Vivaldi); targeted via --browser Vivaldi

Reproduction

bsk session start --browser Vivaldi --json # ok: session_id + agent_window_id
bsk navigate https://example.com --session <id>
# error: operation timed out ... tool RPC timed out after 32s
bsk screenshot --session <id> --out x.png
# error: browser rejected the underlying CDP call
# details: Could not establish background execution for tab <id>: Detached while handling command.

tab list in the same session works and returns real tabs, so this is purely the debugger/CDP layer.

Notes

  • #272 was fixed by #410, but the fix is not in a released extension build yet (latest release is still cli-v0.3.2), so I could not verify whether it also covers Vivaldi.
  • Related suggestion from #272's discussion: detectBrowserMeta silently reports forks (Yandex, Vivaldi, …) as plain chrome, which makes reports like this self-misidentifying. A Vivaldi/YaBrowser probe plus a doctor hint for unsupported browsers would help.
  • Happy to run an instrumented build or provide daemon logs against this setup.
