bigger bet: browse the catalog from inside Godot (then Unity / Unreal) with an editor plugin

Research direction

Start by reading data.json for catalog fields and site/public/shortlist.js for the existing credits export; then review the Godot stack and budget guide mentioned in the issue. Build a Godot 4.x editor plugin that fetches and caches catalog data, displays licence badges, filters entries, and copies credit lines. Done means it installs, shows live catalog data with working filters, and is listed in the Godot Asset Library.

Description

feature priority: low

Why it matters
Developers discover assets while working, not while browsing a website. A Godot editor dock that lists entries, filters by licence and engine fit, opens the source and drops the recorded credit line into a CREDITS.md puts the catalog where the audience already is, and the Godot Asset Library is a free distribution channel. The repo's Godot focus (budget guide, Godot stack, godot topic) makes it the right first engine; Unity (UPM) and Unreal (editor utility widget) follow the same pattern against the same data.json.

Evidence

  • docs/godot-budget-stack.md, stacks/3d-low-poly-arena-godot.md, repo topic godot.
  • data.json carries formats, engine_lock, ue_versions, attribution_string: enough to filter and write credits.
  • site/public/shortlist.js already exports a credits file on the web.

Suggested approach
GDScript-only editor plugin: one dock scene, one HTTPRequest to data.json cached locally, a list with licence badges and "copy credit line". Publish to the Godot Asset Library under CC0/MIT; link from the README. Treat Unity/Unreal as follow-ups once the Godot one has users.

Done when
The plugin is listed in the Godot Asset Library, installs in Godot 4.x, and shows live catalog data with working filters.
