Research direction

Start by locating the ASS Tools “Set position” dialog and its keyboard handling, sizing, overlays, and placement modes; the issue does not name files or tests. Compare the SE5 behavior with SE4 to understand the requested parity. Done means addressing all five listed improvements, including an optional click-to-place mode and a toggle for the overlays.

Description

Hi Nikse, thanks so much for your continued amazing work on Subtitle Edit! I have several related improvement requests for the ASS Tools "Set position" window:

  1. Opening the Set position dialog (via menu or shortcut) has noticeable lag in SE5. It opened instantly in SE4.
  2. The dialog window size can be resized, which is great. But the custom size is not remembered; it always reverts to default size on next open.
  3. SE5 only supports click-and-drag positioning. SE4 had a very handy mode where the subtitle preview follows the mouse cursor, and a single click places it directly. Could this old SE4 placement mode be brought back as an option?
  4. When Safe area, Center lines, and Snap to guides are all disabled, the bounding dashed rectangle and blue anchor dot are no longer useful. Please add a toggle to hide these overlay elements.
  5. When the Set position window opens, keyboard focus lands inside the X/Y coordinate input boxes. This makes arrow key fine adjustment of subtitle position not work immediately.

These changes would make visual ASS pos editing much smoother, matching the comfortable workflow I had in SE4.
