Research direction

The failure comes from the CMake configure step (cmake -S . -B Release -DENABLE_DISTRIBUTION=ON) fetching Eigen 3.4.0 from gitlab.com, and the same fetch breaks the macOS uv sync path. Find where Eigen is fetched in the build configuration and the CI workflow that runs it, then decide between retrying, pinning a mirror, or vendoring the source; the issue does not pick one. Done when the Eigen fetch no longer depends on GitLab availability in CI, which the maintainers would need to confirm before work starts.

Description

bug
Description

On master (8969093263, October 16, 2026), Ubuntu and macOS fail to fetch Eigen 3.4.0 from https://gitlab.com/libeigen/eigen.git. All three clone attempts return:

fatal: remote error: GitLab is currently unable to handle this request due to load

Ubuntu fails during CMake configuration after 57 tests pass (2 expected failures). macOS fails during uv sync, before tests run. Windows passes.

Reproduction

In a fresh checkout of that commit, run:

cmake -S . -B Release -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release -DENABLE_DISTRIBUTION=ON

Reproduction depends on GitLab availability.

Expected behavior

Eigen downloads successfully so builds and tests can complete.

Additional context

The Eigen fetch configuration is unchanged since the previous passing master run. The error points to GitLab overload; a fresh local clone of tag 3.4.0 now succeeds.
