Research direction

Start by locating the vault's blockstore and index entry points, then read the existing CAR pinning work that shares @helia/car. Add a round-trip test using fixture blocks: export the vault, import it into a fresh profile, and verify the same items appear; also check duplicate imports and that corrupt files leave the vault unchanged.

Description

enhancement helia storage tier-2

Summary

A backup and restore action for everything in the local vault.

Estimated size: M

Motivation

Browser storage can be cleared or evicted; users need a safety net that does not depend on a pinning service.

Proposal

  • Export all indexed CIDs to a single CAR plus a small manifest (names, types, dates).
  • Import reads the CAR into the blockstore and restores index entries, skipping duplicates.

Acceptance criteria

  • A vault exported in one browser profile imports into another and shows the same items.
  • Importing twice does not create duplicates.
  • Corrupt files fail with a clear error and change nothing.

Out of scope

  • Encryption of exports.

Technical notes and risks

  • Shares @helia/car with the CAR pinning issue, but neither depends on the other.

Dependencies

  • None; can be picked up independently.

Testing plan

  • Round-trip test with fixture blocks.

Part of #43. Ground rules for the content layer: no secrets in the repo, content-layer failures must never block or discard quantum execution, and tests and docs ship with every PR.
