Research direction
Start by reading src/main/tools/shell.ts:226-273 and chat_manager.ts:412-428 to trace background-command storage and how chats share a ShellRunner. Check the command-output and stop paths to understand when entries are read or removed. Done means finished output no longer accumulates indefinitely and one chat cannot read or stop another chat’s commands.

Description
Found in the 2026-10-07 code review (read).
Problem
- Memory: entries in
ShellRunner.background(src/main/tools/shell.ts:226-273) are removed only bystopBackground/stopAll. A finished entry keepsoutputandunread, up to 1 M characters each, until Stop or a project switch. - Shared IDs: one
ShellRunnerserves every chat in a workspace (chat_manager.ts:412-428). A reopened chat can callcommand_output id=1and read or stop a command another chat started.
Fix
- Delete an entry once it has exited and its output has been read, or keep only the last N finished entries.
- Key background entries by session ID.
