Research direction

Read the Autonomous Physics Lab demos referenced in #867, #869, #871, #879–#881 and the examples in #897 to understand the existing solver and render flows. Then inspect the updated adapter mentioned in the proposal and determine how a mocked vision model could exercise the claim and verification loop. Done means claims are recorded as confirmed, refuted, or uncheckable, the lab never acts on unchecked claims, and the mocked test plus real-run measurement status are recorded.

Description

Why

Cosmos 3's Reasoner (text + vision → text) is meant for scene understanding and planning. The Autonomous Physics Lab demos (#867, #869, #871, #879–#881) drive solvers with an agent. A vision reasoner could read a camera frame or a render ("where is the flow separating?", "which part is overheating?"). Its answers would be claims that the lab can check with a solver.

Proposal

A tool, observe_and_claim(frames, question). It returns structured claims, for example {quantity, location, value_or_direction, confidence}.

A verifier maps each claim to a check:

  • a probe in the CFD or FEA field;
  • a closed form;
  • the physics judge (sibling issue).

It records each claim as confirmed, refuted or uncheckable.

A metric: claim precision against solver truth on a fixed set of 30 renders from existing examples (the Ahmed body, heat sinks, pipe bends from #897).

Without a GPU: the tool takes any OpenAI-compatible vision model, or a mock. The Cosmos Reasoner is one backend, through the updated adapter.

Acceptance

  • A mocked test of the claim and verify loop.
  • One recorded run of a real reasoner, with its claim precision, if one is available. Otherwise this is marked not measured.
  • The lab never acts on an unchecked claim.
