Description

good first issue HIGH PRIORITY level1 NSoC'26

Set up a complete Docker-based development and deployment environment for the Tauri desktop application to ensure consistent local development, dependency isolation, reproducible builds, and easier onboarding for contributors.

The Docker setup should support development workflows, dependency management, Tauri build requirements, frontend integration, and future CI/CD pipelines.

🎯 Goals

  • Containerize the Tauri application environment
  • Ensure consistent development setup across all systems
  • Reduce host machine dependency conflicts
  • Simplify contributor onboarding
  • Prepare infrastructure for CI/CD and production builds
  • Support frontend + Rust/Tauri workflows inside containers
  • Improve scalability for future microservice integrations

🧱 Scope

Backend / Desktop Environment

Setup Docker configuration for:

  • Rust

  • Cargo

  • Tauri CLI

  • Node.js runtime

  • Package manager support

    • npm
    • pnpm
    • yarn
  • Frontend framework dependencies

  • System libraries required by Tauri

🖥️ Required Docker Files

1. Dockerfile

Create production-ready multi-stage Dockerfile with:

Base Environment
  • Rust latest stable
  • Node.js LTS
  • Cargo tools
  • Tauri dependencies
  • Build essentials
  • Webkit2GTK dependencies
  • GTK libraries
  • OpenSSL
  • pkg-config
  • curl
  • git
Features
  • Optimized image size
  • Layer caching support
  • Dependency caching
  • Faster rebuilds
  • Security-focused image structure
  • Non-root user support

2. docker-compose.yml

Setup development orchestration with:

  • Tauri app service
  • Hot reload support
  • Mounted source volumes
  • Environment variable support
  • Port mapping
  • Shared network configuration

3. .dockerignore

Exclude:

  • node_modules
  • target
  • dist
  • build artifacts
  • logs
  • OS files
  • env secrets

⚙️ Tauri-Specific Requirements

Linux Dependencies

Ensure container includes:

  • libwebkit2gtk
  • libappindicator
  • librsvg
  • patchelf
  • build-essential
  • libssl-dev
  • libgtk-3-dev

🔥 Development Experience

Dev Container Support

Add support for:

  • VSCode Dev Containers
  • Remote container development
  • Shared workspace environment

Optional:

  • .devcontainer/
  • preconfigured extensions
  • Rust tooling
  • ESLint
  • Prettier

📦 Build System

Development Mode

Support:

docker compose up

Production Build

Support:

docker build -t tauri-app .

Tauri Build Commands

Ensure support for:

npm run tauri dev
npm run tauri build

🧪 Validation Checklist

Docker Validation

  • Docker image builds successfully
  • Containers start without errors
  • Hot reload works properly
  • Rust compilation works
  • Frontend build works
  • Tauri build works
  • Volumes sync correctly
  • Environment variables load correctly

🔒 Security Considerations

  • Use minimal base image
  • Avoid running as root
  • Prevent sensitive file copying
  • Proper environment variable handling
  • Secure Docker layer practices

📚 Documentation Requirements

Create/update documentation for:

  • Docker setup
  • Local development
  • Container commands
  • Common troubleshooting
  • Build workflow
  • Volume usage
  • Environment setup

📁 Suggested Structure

/docker
  ├── Dockerfile
  ├── docker-compose.yml
  ├── .dockerignore
