Linux/NVIDIA: full-range 4:2:0 streams #FF0000 as green and #0000FF as dark green

Start in src/platform/linux/cuda.cu, at the RGBA_to_NV12 chroma store identified in the issue, and check how full-range values are converted to the 8-bit output. Reproduce with Linux/NVIDIA, 4:2:0 and full-range capture using the supplied color-window steps. Done when pure red and blue stream correctly while the other listed colors and limited-range behavior remain correct.

Describe the Bug

When a client uses 4:2:0 at full color range, two colors are incorrect in the stream:

• Pure red (#FF0000) shows as green.
• Pure blue (#0000FF) shows as dark green.

Colors one step below the maximum are correct. #FE0000 shows as red and #0000FE shows as blue. Green and white are also correct. The display on the host shows all colors correctly.

The problem does not occur in these configurations:

• Moonlight for macOS with YUV 4:4:4 on, at full range.
• Moonlight for macOS at limited range (COLOR_RANGE_OVERRIDE=0).
• Moonlight for iOS. It uses limited range (Color range: MPEG).

I tested stable 2026.914.233613 and pre-release v2026.1017.22144. Both versions have the problem.

Steps to reproduce

1. Use a Linux host with an NVIDIA GPU and NVENC.

2. In Moonlight for macOS, set YUV 4:4:4 to off.

3. Connect to the host.

4. Make sure that the Sunshine log shows Color range: JPEG for this session.

5. On the X display of the host, run this script. It opens six windows. Each window has one color and shows its color code.

6. Compare the Moonlight window with the display of the host.

Result: the #FF0000 window is green and the #0000FF window is dark green. The other four windows are correct.

Expected Behavior

At full range with 4:2:0, #FF0000 streams as red and #0000FF streams as blue. This is the same result as at limited range or with YUV 4:4:4.

Additional Context

Possible cause

The possible cause is the chroma store in RGBA_to_NV12 in src/platform/linux/cuda.cu (lines 205-213 in v2026.1017.22144). Shortened:

• At full range, V is 1.0 for #FF0000 and U is 1.0 for #0000FF.
• The kernel multiplies the value by 256. The result is 256.0.
• The kernel writes this result to a uint8_t without a clamp. Thus, the value overflows to 0.
• A chroma value of 0 decodes to approximately (0, 0.47, 0) for red and (0, 0.19, 0) for blue. These colors agree with image 1.
• For #FE0000 and #0000FE, the result is 255.5. The kernel writes 255, and there is no overflow.
• At limited range, the maximum is 240. RGBA_to_YUV444 multiplies by 255, not 256. Thus, these configurations do not overflow.

Why I do not think that this is a client problem

The problem occurs only on the Mac, but I think that the incorrect values are already in the stream from Sunshine. I have these reasons:

• The same Mac and the same Moonlight version decode full range correctly with YUV 4:4:4 (image 3). If the client decoded full range incorrectly, image 3 would also be incorrect.
• Only the maximum value is incorrect. #FE0000 is correct, but #FF0000 is incorrect. The client receives YUV values, not RGB values. For both colors, the correct V value is 255. If Sunshine sent 255 for both colors, the Mac would show almost the same red for both.
• The colors on the Mac agree with a chroma value of 0. The decoded values are (0, 0.47, 0) for red and (0, 0.19, 0) for blue. Thus, the client decodes correctly the values that it receives.
• Moonlight for iOS shows the correct colors because it uses limited range. At limited range, the maximum is 240, and there is no overflow.

I expect that all clients that use 4:2:0 at full range show the same problem with this host. I tested only Moonlight for macOS at full range.

Possible fix

A clamp before the store prevents the overflow:

Another possible fix is to multiply by 255, as RGBA_to_YUV444 does.

Scope

I tested only NvFBC capture on Linux with NVIDIA. cuda.cu also converts frames for X11 capture on NVIDIA. Windows uses Direct3D shaders, and VA-API uses OpenGL shaders. These write to 8-bit targets that clamp the values. Thus, it is possible that they do not have this problem. I did not test them.
