Research direction

This is a product-process issue, not a code patch. Read the acceptance criteria and related issues #50 (batch-adoption onboarding) and #52 (difficulty/dependency calibration). Draft a short first-run checklist covering install, a non-demo vault, palee next, and a completed study session; run it once and write down friction as bug, UX, docs, or missing capability. Done means the checklist exists, one realistic onboarding run is documented, and any blockers are filed as separate issues before Phase 2 expansion.

Description

enhancement priority: low

Summary

PALEE has a detailed engineering roadmap and strong implementation/invariant coverage, but there is not yet an equally explicit loop for validating whether the product is understandable and useful to people using it.

This issue is about product validation, not adding another feature.

Problem

Engineering planning can answer:

  • Is the storage safe?
  • Is the graph valid?
  • Is SM-2 correct?
  • Are commands tested?
  • Does CI pass?

It does not by itself answer:

  • Can a new user understand what PALEE does in the first few minutes?
  • Can they get from install to their first useful recommendation without assistance?
  • Is palee next understandable and useful?
  • Can they complete a first study session successfully?
  • Do onboarding workflows remain practical for a real vault?
  • Which parts cause users to stop using the tool?

Proposed direction

Create a small, repeatable product-validation loop alongside the engineering trigger/issue system.

Track a few concrete outcomes rather than building a large analytics system:

  1. First-run success — install/configure PALEE and reach a working vault.
  2. First useful result — reach a meaningful palee next/study recommendation.
  3. First completed session — complete a study/review workflow without manual intervention.
  4. Onboarding friction — document where a new user gets stuck, especially around adoption, dependencies, and configuration.
  5. Return usage — whether the workflow is useful enough to repeat after the first day/week.

Scope

  • Define a small manual or lightweight test protocol.
  • Test PALEE on at least one vault that was not created specifically around the current implementation.
  • Record friction points and classify them as bug, UX problem, documentation problem, or missing capability.
  • Use findings to influence Phase 2+ priorities.
  • Keep this intentionally lightweight; do not add telemetry or external analytics without a separate privacy/product decision.

Acceptance criteria

  • A repeatable first-run test checklist exists.
  • At least one realistic onboarding run is documented.
  • The biggest onboarding/user-experience blockers are captured as separate focused issues when discovered.
  • Product findings are reviewed before major Phase 2 feature expansion.

Related

#50 already addresses the known batch-adoption onboarding blocker. #52 addresses dynamic difficulty/dependency calibration. This issue covers the broader feedback loop so future blockers are discovered systematically instead of only after implementation.
