Research direction

The compiler settings live in tsconfig.json around lines 2-17, next to the existing strict flag. Enable noUncheckedIndexedAccess there, then run tsc --noEmit to list the errors it surfaces, which the issue expects in the graph code and the TopicNode index signature. Done when tsc passes with the flag on and the existing test suite still passes; the other flags are optional and need the maintainer's decision.

Description

core priority: low refactor

Location: tsconfig.json:2-17

strict is on, but given the heavy use of optional properties, index signatures (TopicNode), and array/record indexing in graph code, noUncheckedIndexedAccess and exactOptionalPropertyTypes would catch a real class of undefined-from-arr[i]/map[k] bugs. noFallthroughCasesInSwitch and noImplicitOverride are cheap wins too.

Fix: Enable noUncheckedIndexedAccess (and optionally the others) and fix the fallout.
