Research direction

Choose one yearly folder and run ruff or flake8 on its Python files. Review the warnings and fix safe style issues such as unused imports, spacing, line length, or naming without changing behavior. The issue does not name a folder or test command; consider the work done when that folder's safe warnings are fixed and the changes remain limited to that folder.
