Research direction
Start by locating the workflow-view canvas and the existing workflow tree and New-step dialog referenced in the issue. Trace how boxes, links, and step settings are created so the canvas interactions can reuse the current workflow model. Done means boxes support adding, deleting, re-linking, insertion, link-content editing, and opening step settings, including warnings for steps with children.
Written by the indexing model from the issue text.
Description
Recipes (#710) and the workflow view (#341, #674) create linked boxes; changing a workflow afterwards still goes through the tree and the New-step dialog. Wanted later: edit on the canvas itself — drag to re-link a step to another source, delete a step with a warning for its children, insert a step between two, change what a link carries (geometry, orbitals, Hessian, scan point), and open a step's settings from its box.
