Description

MO diagram and similar views open as separate windows, which suits two screens but not one (most students: one laptop screen).

Proposed (2026-10-23, for discussion; mock-ups first):

  • A 'second view' for the Builder's viewer area: off, or split with a draggable divider; the second half shows the active plot (MO diagram, density map #215, spectra). One mechanism for every plot type.
  • Split to the right in a wide window, stacked when the window is taller than wide.
  • Variant for the smallest screens: the molecule as a small inset over a large plot (not the plot as an inset; a diagram full of labels is unreadable at inset size).
  • The link is the reason: clicking an MO level shows the orbital in 3-D; picking atoms in 3-D sets the density-map plane. Both halves must be visible together.
  • Docked panes (possible today) stay as the fallback.

Risks: about 680 px per half on a 1366-px laptop (the narrow-label steps of the #458 label work apply); viewer redraw on resize under wx 3.2/GTK3, test on Linux, Windows and macOS.

First step: mock-ups made from real headless captures of the viewer and the plots, at 1366×768 and 1920×1080: split right, stacked, inset, docked. Made after the #458 label prototype so they show the new labels.
