This was reportedly fixed:

So the code related to sendResponse should be dropped:

https://github.com/fregante/webext-msg/blob/e8796cb1ecf5c81c3e07b9263a8223487df86760/index.ts#L22-L23

Removing the code is easy; the important part for this issue is to verify that the bug was actually fixed in Chrome
