Description
Description
This Chrome extension currently generates a QR code for the active tab’s URL. However, it’s no longer working due to reliance on Manifest V2, which has been deprecated by Chrome. The extension must be updated to Manifest V3 to comply with Chrome’s latest extension policies.
Context
Chrome has officially ended support for Manifest V2 extensions.
Most QR-code-based extensions (including Chrome’s own native feature) now work natively in the browser.
Still, this extension remains a great Hacktoberfest-friendly project for contributors who want to learn about Manifest V3 migration and improve their understanding of the Chrome Extensions API.
Proposed Solution
- Convert manifest.json from V2 → V3.
- Replace background scripts with service workers.
- Update API usage to be compatible with Manifest V3 (e.g., chrome.scripting, chrome.action, etc.).
- Test and verify QR code generation works across tabs and pages.
- Update documentation (README.md) to reflect new architecture.
Additional Notes
Google Chrome now includes a native “Share → QR Code” feature, so this project is more of a learning-oriented update and open source contribution opportunity. If no one picks this up during Hacktoberfest, I’ll take it up myself after the event.
