Description

The rusqlite already allows linking to a custom build of sqlite/libsql. We use it in tests, but let's go a step further and build a full replacement for the existing CLI in Rust. Pros:

  • easy integration with lots of tools with superior DX, e.g. the tracing crate
  • better development speed once we rewrite enough legacy code
  • way lower threshold for new contributions

Research direction
The existing CLI is written in C (see src/ directory). The issue suggests rewriting it in Rust using the rusqlite crate, which is already used in tests. Start by exploring the current CLI's functionality (e.g., command parsing, execution) and the test harness that uses rusqlite. Look at the rusqlite documentation for linking custom SQLite builds. There are no linked PRs or comments, so initial work should propose a design document or prototype.
