Research direction

Start at the media preflight entry point for the Play test tone action and compare its output-device handling with the interviewer voice playback path. Reproduce in the Windows 11 Chrome released binary, including after unplugging and reconnecting headphones; done means the tone is audible on the first press and continues using the default output device.

Description

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open the interview page; the media preflight starts.
  2. Press Play test tone: always silent.
  3. Switch the output device (unplug/plug headphones), press Play it again: occasionally heard once, then silent again.
  4. Control: after the interview starts, the interviewer's voice is always audible from the default output device.

Expected behavior

The test tone should play from the default output device exactly like the interviewer's voice, audible from the first press.

Actual

The test tone is silent; only occasionally audible once right after a device switch. The interviewer's voice on the same default device never has this problem.
