Research direction

Start by tracing how RegionServers are launched and how the start scripts use HBASE_ZNODE_FILE. Investigate whether the operator can provide or preserve this environment variable, and verify that crash cleanup behavior improves without breaking the existing deployment.

Written by the indexing model from the issue text.

Description

In the logs of RegionServers we see

2024-02-08 13:29:01,530 WARN [regionserver/hbase-regionserver-default-2:16020] hbase.ZNodeClearer: Environment variable HBASE_ZNODE_FILE not set; znodes will not be cleared on crash by start scripts (Longer MTTR!)

Investigate if this is something we can improve on.
