Description

This seems pretty much straightforward from the PyPSA-Eur dev: https://github.com/PyPSA/pypsa-eur/pull/336/files

Benefits:

  • Speed+. No rasterization is needed when excluding areas
  • Speed+. Use directly shapefile with new Atlite version
  • Speed+. Direct download of Natura data
  • Less code+. Remove build_natura rule and scripts

Of course we don't use the NATURA2000 data, but maybe we can assess if some of the changes can be implemented

Study the referenced PyPSA Eur pull request (#336) to understand how they removed Natura rasterization and directly used shapefiles. Then, identify similar patterns in PyPSA Earth's codebase (likely in the build natura rule and related scripts) and adapt the changes, ensuring compatibility with the newer Atlite version.
