Research direction

Start by reviewing the three API signatures in the issue and the existing DirectXTex facilities that correspond to their surface, volume, and texture-loading behavior. A complete sample demonstrating the requested legacy behavior, including its heavyweight nature, would define done; no target files or tests are identified in the issue.

Description

documentation

DirectXTex has all the facilities needed to support the old 'load-surface-from-surface' behavior. A sample implementation would help those porting D3DX code as well as demonstrate how heavy-weight that function was:

HRESULT WINAPI
    D3DXLoadSurfaceFromSurface(
        LPDIRECT3DSURFACE9        pDestSurface,
        CONST PALETTEENTRY*       pDestPalette,
        CONST RECT*               pDestRect,
        LPDIRECT3DSURFACE9        pSrcSurface,
        CONST PALETTEENTRY*       pSrcPalette,
        CONST RECT*               pSrcRect,
        DWORD                     Filter,
        D3DCOLOR                  ColorKey);

HRESULT WINAPI
    D3DXLoadVolumeFromVolume(
