Click handler is broken with matplotlib>=3.5

Start by reproducing the click-handler failure with the pixelstitch package and the classical Notebook and JupyterLab versions listed in the issue. Compare the affected matplotlib 3.5–3.9 environments and verify that clicks produce the expected interaction in each supported environment.
