Research direction
The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. First locate the code that opens sidebar-selected documents in tabs and determine how an option to disable that behavior should be exposed; done means the option prevents new tabs from opening when enabled.

Description
I hate that every time I select a document in the file sidebar, it opens in a new tab. For me, it's complexity that just makes it harder to do things.
