Start with the FontForge Styles guide and inspect the XKCD back-catalogue for references to actual italicised characters. Determine how the font's existing characters are represented and define the italic transformation, including exceptions found in those references; done means an italic style is available and matches the relevant examples.

We might get away with an automatic transformation for most of the characters - but there are plenty of examples in the XKCD back-catalogue of actual italicised versions (fans: please provide references to the XKCDs in the comments).
