Read the xpartition repository and its issue 13 first, then compare the overlapping work described here with xarray-beam's existing handling of dataset "blocks" without dask. The issue is complete only when the projects agree on a concrete way to share helper functions or otherwise combine efforts.

@spencerkclark and @nbren12's xpartition looks like it solves some very similar problems.
It would be great to figure out how to work together, e.g., to share helper functions for working with dataset "blocks" without using dask: https://github.com/spencerkclark/xpartition/issues/13
