It would advantageous to perform decompression at the envoy gateway layer. Configuring envoy decompressors on the Gateway CRD is the ask https://www.envoyproxy.io/docs/envoy/latest/configuration/http/http_filters/decompressor_filter

Study the existing HTTP filter implementation in the envoy gateway codebase. Look at how other filters (e.g., compression, fault injection) are represented in Gateway API types and translated to Envoy xDS configuration. Then design changes to add a decompressor filter.
