Description

Problem

The project currently has inconsistent error handling patterns across different modules. Some use custom exceptions, others use generic try/except blocks, and logging is not standardized. This makes debugging difficult and error messages inconsistent for users.

Proposed Solution

  1. Create a centralized error handling module with custom exception classes
  2. Implement a consistent logging strategy with proper log levels
  3. Define standard error message templates
  4. Ensure all modules follow the same error handling pattern

Implementation Approach

  1. Create src/utils/errors.py with a hierarchy of custom exceptions:

    • GenerativeAIError (base exception)
    • ModelError (for model-related errors)
    • FileError (for file operations)
    • etc.
  2. Define standard logging configuration in src/utils/logging_config.py

    • Set appropriate log levels (DEBUG, INFO, WARNING, ERROR)
    • Configure log formatting with timestamps and context
    • Add file and console handlers
  3. Refactor existing code to use the new exception hierarchy and logging configuration

Benefits

  • Easier debugging and error tracing
  • Consistent error messages for users
  • Improved maintainability
  • Better error recovery mechanisms
  • Structured logs for analysis
