Currently, git submodules are listed as individual repositories in the source control view. This makes it hard to identify the submodules. Using https://github.com/tlemo/darwin for example, the list of submodules is not very helpful:

Since git submodules can be explicitly assigned descriptive names, it would be nice if VS Code would have the option to use the submodule's name.

Investigate how git submodules are currently displayed in the source control view. Look at the git extension's source code for how submodule repositories are listed. Consider using the submodule name from .gitmodules or git config. Check for existing APIs that could provide submodule names.
